L.A. Stories

My artistic engagement with Los Angeles began at seventeen when I moved to the City of Angels to study the visual arts at UCLA, eager to immerse myself in the city's shifting cultural movements. I was immediately drawn to the mid-century fantasy of the basin’s post-World War II roadside architecture, the monumental movie palaces of Westwood, and the faded elegance and mystery of the Bradbury Building. In this latest body of work, I re-engage with these architectural touchstones of Mirroring the complexity of human memory, the surfaces of my paintings are built by layering images of figures, vintage automobiles, and historic architecture through a tactile process of application, scraping, and pentimenti. A viewer once described my work as "time travel where the molecules are not quite sure where they belong." This observation aligns deeply with quantum theories suggesting that time exists as both a physical dimension and a layered, psychological reality. I invite viewers to engage in a process of slow looking, transforming these oil on linen canvases of Los Angeles landmarks into meditative spaces where the past, present, and future converge.
